Biohackers review

I finished Money Heist and Biohackers was one of the recommended shows. Netflix describes it as a medical show and a science-fiction show. The premise is a student enters a school on a mission to uncover a conspiracy related to her family and a professor. It peaked my interest so here are my thoughts for season one. Enjoy.

Episode 1:

  1. Opening scene looks like Harry Potter with the train
  2. Glad we got the name on the necklace
  3. Dubbing and subtitles do not match up at all.
  4. Oh no. Everyone’s getting sick on the train.
  5. Oh crap. Kid down.
  6. Does the med student survive? Why wasn’t she affected?
  7. Flashback time.
  8. She’s carrying a box, a bag, and a lamp. Is that all she has to move in?
  9. One roommate is walking around topless, and the other is doing a science experiment. Renting rooms, am I right?
  10. Dude inserted a chip into his hand?
  11. The book tells you how to do exactly that? What kind of books does she read?
  12. Oh, she locked the door. We know she means business.
  13. A bunch of stuff hidden away about a particular woman. I’m guessing her mom.
  14. Are we flashing back in a flashback?
  15. She kept that little doll for years.
  16. Can she talk any faster?
  17. We just got her life story in ten seconds.
  18. Where did she get the bike?
  19. The truth shall set you free. Unless you’re in Russia.
  20. Here’s that woman from the newspapers.
  21. Synthetic biology.
  22. A bit of a god complex she has.
  23. The guy sitting in the front row fast asleep is so accurate of college classes.
  24. Mia’s little buddy is sick and Dr. Lorenz, the doctor from the newspapers, treated him. The music made it seem like he didn’t make it.
  25. Her assistant was the guy sleeping, even better.
  26. Oh god, aggressive underlining.
  27. The library was closing but the windows made it look early still.
  28. Why does every person who is alone in a dark area go towards the noise?
  29. The mouse’s name is Mendel and he glows. I love him.
  30. Oh, it’s the assistant’s mouse.
  31. How many people live in this flat?
  32. Does every college student in Germany own a bike?
  33. I’m sorry, eye drops that are synthesized with a protein from deep sea fish?
  34. Throws up and walks off. Mood.
  35. Did her eyes go back to normal?
  36. What’s with the scar on her arm?
  37. A bio-piano. I need one asap.
  38. The Marvel references are a bit forced.
  39. Did she get to drink her beer?
  40. Let me guess. Something he did caused the disease or pathogen or whatever caused all the train passengers to collapse.
  41. A med student wouldn’t need a gene vector explained to her. That was strictly for the viewers.
  42. She doesn’t get sick. Wonder why.
  43. She rejected him hard. Does she just want the lab job?
  44. She never gave him her number. How’d he text her?
  45. Andi and the doctor had a thing didn’t they?
  46. Her watch face is huge.
  47. Mia has an obsession with Dr. Lorenz.
  48. So, her name isn’t Mia?

Episode 2:

  1. The boy died. Was it her brother?
  2. Lorenz did something to Ben, which may have killed him and Mia found out.
  3. That explains why Mia kept the figurine.
  4. How many things has Ole made?
  5. How did she get that scar on her arm?
  6. Oh smooth move bud.
  7. Why was Mia the only person without a laptop?
  8. Outdated textbooks. I know that feeling.
  9. Sorry, I’m not tossing a $150 textbook in the trash.
  10. Did Mia just leave her bag in the classroom?
  11. Lorreta really going for Nikolas.
  12. Did…did Lorenz just kill Mia’s parents?
  13. She wanted the paperwork they had in the car and killed the parents. Damn.
  14. So, that’s how Mia got the scar.
  15. He just walked off and left her.
  16. You have to earn the card to open a door. What if you need to open the door?
  17. Her brother’s DNA has to be in there somewhere.
  18. Those subjects look young.
  19. Her DNA should already be in the computer.
  20. She’s going to break in to steal back her DNA.
  21. She’s going to take Lotta’s DNA and switch hers out.
  22. What is wrong with Ole? Jeez. You can’t do everything you see on Youtube.
  23. He’s doing it for his fans.
  24. How many times has he cut himself for these videos?
  25. Scars do make people look cool.
  26. Eagle pose = puking parrot
  27. Sometimes life sucks. Statement of the century.
  28. It would be ironic if Lotta’s DNA was already in the system.
  29. That DNA switch was so bad.
  30. She put the DNA in upside down and Jasper fixed it. Wonder if he knows something is up.
  31. Why is Lorenz so handsy with Jasper?
  32. The freckles gene variant is really what gives it away. Wow.
  33. She’s not blonde though. She’s a red head.
  34. I think her real name is Emma something, and she changed it to Mia Auckerland.
  35. Oh, she got a card.
  36. There’s someone she keeps texting saved as anonymous in her phone. Wonder who it is.
  37. Lorenz creepily watching Jasper is uncomfortable.

Episode 3:

  1. So, Lorenz caused the car crash that killed her parents. Does Mia want revenge or to know why?
  2. What did that poor pencil do to her?
  3. For such smart people, they sure just believe whatever Mia says without question. Why would Lorenz have Mia do work that she can’t access?
  4. There’s her brother.
  5. And there she is. Her last name is Engels.
  6. Of course it’s at Lorenz’s house. How will Mia talk her way in there?
  7. Is Jasper drugging himself?
  8. They put bio-luminescence in the plants. It looks cool but what’s the point though?
  9. They are glowing. That’s a lot of the luminescence that just comes right off. Whoever did that synthesis didn’t do a great job.
  10. Is this double felix guy important?
  11. I once again have to ask, do German students not own cars?
  12. Is Jasper really this dumb, or just doesn’t care about bringing Mia to Lorenz’s house?
  13. And he just lets her roam around the house?
  14. That house is really minimally decorated.
  15. The attempt at guessing the password was funny. I would have laughed if it really was bitch.
  16. Jasper engineered the mosquitos to carry and pass on diseases more effectively? Why? Wouldn’t it be better to carry vaccines to those diseases?
  17. Why did he have a mixture of diseases in there? Wouldn’t he have separate containers for different diseases?
  18. And why leave the container out just like that?
  19. I really don’t understand Jasper.
  20. And now he’s collapsed.
  21. Was it whatever he took earlier?
  22. No hospital. Must be American.
  23. Why does Nikolas know what to do? How often has this happened?
  24. Oh, he has Huntington’s.
  25. Mia’s concern about Lorenz finding out she was there is laughable when Jasper is practically dying on the couch.
  26. Mia to the rescue.
  27. Maybe not.
  28. Chen – Lu to the rescue instead.
  29. Chen-Lu talks so fast, my god.
  30. It is probably illegal, but probably a lot of things in Lorenz’s house are.
  31. So, she lived with her grandma after the crash. Wonder if the grandma changed her name or Mia did it herself.
  32. Mia unplugged the Wi-Fi, forcing Lorenzo to use the computer.
  33. How can no one hear her printing off a novel?
  34. Nikolas knows something is up with Mia.
  35. Oh, that was sneaky.
  36. Nikolas knows now. Wonder if he’ll tell Jasper.
  37. Flashback?
  38. No, that’s Jasper. Oh, and the little girl who passed out in the first episode.
  39. Who beat up Jasper?
  40. I think that’s Mia and Nikolas in the background.
  41. Woah, wait, why does Jasper have his disease infested mosquitos?
  42. Did he cause the disease outbreak?
  43. Of course he did.
  44. Why though?

Episode 4:

  1. I love how clothes with English sayings are so prominent in other countries.
  2. How does Ole not have any visible scars or injuries based on all his experiments on himself?
  3. CRISPR with me
  4. I think Ole likes Chen-Lu.
  5. I saw a car. They do exist.
  6. Does Jasper still believe that Mia just wanted the bathroom?
  7. Doesn’t know what Jasper?
  8. That was a terrible attempt at deflecting guilt.
  9. I really like Niklas’ hair.
  10. Yes, calling him asshole will work well.
  11. Do these college students not have laptops?
  12. Jasper, aren’t you supposed to be resting?
  13. Girl, you can’t handle questions, can you?
  14. Is it normal to just walk into someone’s house?
  15. Why hasn’t Niklas looked at the files himself?
  16. Nikolas is just straight up reading a comic while Mia has a crisis.
  17. Really thought AKS was going to be Niklas’ dad.
  18. Lorenz really thinks Mia is a spy. Mia has the stealth capabilities of a child.
  19. Jasper, the official cockblock.
  20. How does Jasper find out that Mia is with Niklas?
  21. Chen-Lu is really enjoying the game.
  22. The nurse is really great at his job, huh?
  23. Poor Arnold.
  24. The way Arnold looked around and whispered that he has six children with three women just got to me.
  25. She’s hiding something in that speaker for sure.
  26. Twins and Germany just makes me anxious.
  27. Lorenz caused the mutations in the embryos, so why isn’t Mia sick?
  28. So, did they provide the embryos to couples that wanted children but didn’t tell them about the mutations?
  29. Murder. Dun dun dun.
  30. Jasper found something and is totally about to confront Mia about it.
  31. You’ve known each other for a week. Stop with the claims of complete trust.
  32. Jasper, hun, go home. You’re drunk.
  33. Was that supposed to be hair? It looked like floss.
  34. None of the paperwork that Jasper found could make Mia guilty. She just likes like a fan of Lorenz. I don’t understand why Jasper immediately thought she was guilty of spying.
  35. Mia’s telling her? Why?

Episode 5:

  1. Don’t go in the house. That’s how people die in thriller movies.
  2. Just check her DNA, Lorenz. Easy way to check.
  3. Jasper is spiraling.
  4. You’ve known her for a week, Jasper. Calm down.
  5. There you go, Lorenz. I thought you were smart.
  6. Did Mia ever get the gene therapy though?
  7. Is Lorenz really buying this because I’m not.
  8. Lorenz always had the DNA though, so she could have been studying it before.
  9. I wonder how many kids were born under the Homo Deus program.
  10. Well now it makes more sense why Jasper is losing it on the train.
  11. Niklas pulling a hit it and quit it.
  12. Oh no, Ole had the covid vaccine. He became magnetic.
  13. Look, a laptop.
  14. Why does Jasper know Niklas’ password?
  15. Jasper’s Huntington’s is getting worse. His paranoia is off the charts.
  16. Why is Lorenz keeping it from Jasper?
  17. I don’t understand why the sudden reveal of Mia going to see Arnold would make Lorenz not trust her. How else would Mia know about Homo Deus?
  18. I’m really confused now. Didn’t Mia already have her gene info in those papers?
  19. So, the one thing Mia didn’t say was that she knew Lorenz made the embryos sick. I guess that explains it.
  20. Wouldn’t the gene sequences be different since it was an experiment?
  21. So, this is where Jasper gets the black eye.
  22. Jasper really was trying to choke him to death. Dude needs a chill pill.
  23. That’s a lot of dead kids.
  24. Would she really have that DNA in an easily accessible fridge like that?
  25. Jasper has that crazy look in his eyes.
  26. Why does he release the mosquitos to attack the train? They get him too, right?
  27. Why does Jasper have Niklas’ email info? He’s not a hacker.
  28. Would the DNA samples go bad just sitting in their bags?
  29. I really want to know what disease Jasper released.

Episode 6:

  1. So, was Mia bitten and collapsed or just collapsed from exhaustion? She’s bleeding so I’m guessing the first.
  2. Mia really just found the one mosquito buzzing around.
  3. Niklas is still alive then.
  4. What is coxsackie?
  5. Did they really just throw her to the ground and lock her in there? What great care.
  6. Wouldn’t the medical team be taking samples by now? They are just milling about outside.
  7. How are there no guards around that train car? She legit just broke the window and jumped out without anyone noticing.
  8. Is she pinning the break-in on Mia or Jasper?
  9. Lotta, shut up.
  10. Chen-Lu, go help for the love of biology.
  11. Ole can’t handle this, but is fine with sticking random technology in his body.
  12. Like Lorenz would actually make the antibodies.
  13. Is he really about to turn Mia in when she was legit on the train?
  14. The police in Germany really suck. They didn’t even check their ID’s.
  15. Lorenz was really just swimming.
  16. Jasper is just a liability to Lorenz at this point.
  17. Did Mia really just sneak into the hospital with no problems?
  18. Are there no cameras in this hospital?
  19. I don’t know if I would trust the doctor.
  20. Is Jasper finally using his brain?
  21. Why did he leave the door open? I revoke my previous statement.
  22. Boy, don’t confront her in her own home.
  23. She really turned him in while he is in her home. What a lovely piece of trash.
  24. Can they put Mia’s blood into Niklas since her immune system fought it off?
  25. Was this just a way to get Mia to come back to Lorenz to get the right antibodies?
  26. Lorenz has a god complex.
  27. Watch the gene therapy not work.
  28. Wouldn’t Lorenz have expected something was up when Mia was young and not sick when her brother was?
  29. Why did the gene therapy work on them but not on the kids?
  30. Wonder where Jasper ran off to.
  31. I wonder if that doctor will be important in the next season.
  32. Will Lorenz go after Mia anyway?
  33. Dang, Jasper had long enough to download all that information before running.
  34. Maybe Jasper is heading to Indonesia for the treatment Lotta mentioned.
  35. Here’s the journalist, Andreas Winter.
  36. I hope she held onto copies of the data, because I’m getting sketchy vibes from this guy.
  37. And there it is.
  38. Is everyone just deaf? How did she not here them?
  39. Someone wants the Homo Deus project since Lorenz is there.

It’s an interesting premise, but there’s a few too many coincidences occurring strictly for the plot to move forward. And something that bothers me so much is the explaining of scientific jargon to Mia going on. She’s a first year medical student, right? She doesn’t need all of these things explained. It’s just a way to explain plot pieces and it’s a rather clunky way to do it. I’ll still keep watching to see who bested Lorenz and Mia, and whether Jasper survives.

That’s the end of season one. Stay tuned for my thoughts on season 2.
